Salmon and Trout Fishing in the Highlands

The North Highlands boasts many extraordinary salmon rivers and an abundance of trout lochs.  The Kyle of Sutherland, just 25 minutes from Links House, is fed by four salmon rivers.  The most renowned of these is the River Oykel, on which Links House has exclusive beats for several weeks of the year. This is a true fly fishing paradise and a day’s fishing is the perfect compliment to golf. Our Director of Fishing, Roger Dowsett, is a professionally qualified trout and salmon fly fishing instructor and a leading independent fly fishing guide in the North Highlands.

Salmon Fishing – The Atlantic salmon is a Scottish icon, an important part of life and culture of the Highlands for centuries. Salmon fishing developed as a sport in Victorian times and is still an important part of the local economy today. We offer salmon fishing excursions with experienced guides, on several of the finest Highland salmon rivers, between April and October. Watch this video to see a young angler land his first ever salmon with some help from Roger.

Trout Fishing – There is an abundance of wild brown trout fishing on both rivers and lochs, easily accessible from Links House. One of the best trout lochs in the Highlands is just a 20 minute drive from Dornoch. Loch Eye is a nutrient rich environment and trout in excess of 2lbs are frequently landed. In addition there is excellent trout fishing on rivers and also some excellent hill loch trout fishing. Boats are available on Loch Eye and on various hill lochs.  Watch this video of a guided trout fishing excursion to a hill loch.

Beginner's Salmon-Fishing Course – Roger conducts an Introductory Salmon Fishing course for beginner's in October, and also offers half or full day salmon and trout fly fishing experiences for beginners or experienced anglers throughout the summer months.

Highland Salmon Experience – this unique highland experience provides guests with a fascinating introduction to a traditional Scottish country sport. It combines a haf day tour through stunning highland scenery, telling the story of the Atlantic Salmon's life cycle - and its historical and cultural importance to the highlands. It includes a half day introductory to fly-fishing on the River Alness.
