Castle Stuart Home of the Scottish Open

Castle Stuart Golf Links, located less than one mile from Inverness Airport and only 45 minutes drive from Links House, is a remarkable new links golf course with expansive, mesmerizing views out over the Moray Firth. Co-designed by Americans Mark Parsinen (also designed Kingsbarns) and Gil Hanse, Castle Stuart is immediately a Highland Classic having hosted the Scottish Open from 2011 through 2013.

Like all the Classics, wind can be friend or foe at Castle Stewart perhaps. The first three holes on each nine hug the coastline often one downwind and the other upwind. The rest of the course rests cleverly atop a plateau with every green appearing to hang over the edge of the sea. The 3rd hole is an absolutely perfectly designed links-style par-4 with an elevated vanishing green set behind a labyrinth of strategically placed bunkers. If the prevailing winds are strong, it is drivable however the risk reward is vexing. Not surprisingly, Andrew Ross and Craig Morrison’s placed  #3 at Castle Stewart in their 2010 book 18 Greatest Scottish Golf Holes

The balance of Castle Stuart offer tremendously exciting holes each with amazing views and many reminiscent of other great Scottish Links moments.  The uphill par-5 12th feels as if it was relocated from Cruden Bay Golf Club and the Par-4 13th as if it belongs within the Ailsa course at Turnberry.  In a fitting moment of symmetry, if the par-4 3rd is into the wind and not reachable off the tee, than its sister hole, the marvelous Par-4 16th is downwind and reachable. Finally, the par-5 18th is among the greatest finishing holes in Scottish links golf.  Many remember Phil Mickelson’s stunning pitch shot here to win the 2013 Scottish Open as a preamble to his win a week later in The Open Championship at Muirfield.

Castle Stuart - The Turnberry of the North

Just 45 minutes drive from Links House is Castle Stuart Golf Links. The course, built by the man who brought us Kingsbarns Golf Links, is the best new course (and possibly the best course of any vintage) in Scotland and plays host to the Scottish Open. Expect this course to climb the World Rankings as it settles into its surroundings as if it were always there.

Castle Stuart offers wonderfully complete practice facilities, as well as spacious locker rooms, restaurant and pro-shop with a beautiful Art Deco Clubhouse.
