River Oykel Salmon Fishing

Links House obtain access to salmon fishing on the River Oykel each year, with weeks in April, June and September. The Oykel is perhaps the most renowned and scenic of the North Highland rivers and has managed to maintain decent salmon catch figures in recent years, compared to some of the salmon rivers further south.

This year regular clients of Links House, brothers Richard and Martin Giles, took up the challenge of a half week of salmon fishing on the daily-changing Lower Beats of the Oykel river system. The conditions were perfect with recent heavy rainfall having raised water levels considerably. Salmon were evident everywhere, with fish making runs from lower beats up to the waterfall above Oykel Bridge Hotel.

The Giles brothers, despite their considerable fishing experience all over the world, had never caught a salmon before and on their first day both Richard and Martin managed to catch 14.5 and 10.5 lb salmon respectively. It was a great start to the fishing trip and despite seeing plenty more fish, they were unlucky not to catch further salmon.
